Alligators In January

Dennis is an alligator that lives in the China Cupboard next to Dot and Mae. He is named Dennis after a famous poet who wrote one of Big Girl Gabriella’s favorite poems. Dot and Mae would like to share it with you today:

Alligator Pie

Alligator pie, alligator pie,
If I don’t get some I think I’m gonna die.
Give away the green grass, give away the sky,
But don’t give away my alligator pie.

Alligator stew, alligator stew,
If I don’t get some I don’t know what I’ll do.
Give away my furry hat, give away my shoe,
But don’t give away my alligator stew.

Alligator soup, alligator soup,
If I don’t get some I think I’m gonna droop.
Give away my hockey stick, give away my hoop,
But don’t give away my alligator soup.

~Dennis Lee (1974)

Maybe Alligator pie sounds very delicious today because it’s the middle of January and it’s cold and not very green around here. If you would like to make some Alligator Pie like Dot and Mae are going to do, here is their recipe:

Ingredients: 1 unbaked Graham Cracker pie crust
8 ounces Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
8 ounces Sour Cream
8 ounces cool whip
2 drops of green food coloring

Mix Philadelphia Cream Cheese and sour cream well. add 2 drops of green food coloring. Fold in Cool Whip. Pour into pie crust. Refrigerate for 2 hrs. or overnight. Extra Cool Whip can be added on top and cherries added on top.

mmmmmm…..

If you want to make Alligator soup or Alligator stew, you are on your own. Dot and Mae don’t have the recipes for those and Dennis wants to tell you that they would taste very bad. Like old watery rubber. So for Dennis’ sake, please don’t eat Alligators!

While you are eating your yummy Alligator-free Alligator pie, you might want to read a very good book that is also one of Big Girl Gabriella’s favorites. The name of the book is Keep Your Mouth Closed, Dear by a person named Aliki. It’s about an alligator named Charlie who has a very large mouth and he swallows everything from wooden spoons to his father’s alarm clock. His parents try everything to help him – even putting a zipper on his mouth! It’s a very funny and crazy read – go to your library and check it out! You must find out what happens in the end! It’s great!

Well, Dot and Mae are off to make pie and sing “Alligator Pie, Alligator Pie, If I don’t get some I think I’m gonna die!” and read books to their good friend Dennis the Alligator. Like he always says, “See you later alligator!”

(psst . . . now you say “After while, crocodile!”)
